Dry Tortugas National Park
February 1, 2015 - Southern Florida

The third and final National Park on my Florida trip was Dry Tortugas National Park. It's basically a gargantuan brick fort (Fort Jefferson) from the Civil War era on a Florida key way out in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles west of Key West, only accessible by plane or boat. Once we arrived I took a ranger-guided historical tour of the fort which was pretty fascinating. Apparently at that time there were several strategic reasons for controlling the area. I also did a little snorkeling near a couple of outstanding beaches and the beautiful water in the area.
