My previous two trips to San Francisco I actually tried to get Alcatraz tickets the day of, but both times it was completely sold out. This trip I made sure to order them a couple weeks in advance. I watched a movie and did the self-guided audio tour in the cell blocks, which was pretty fascinating...like a dramatization with actual voices of previous inmates talking about their stay. Interestingly, one of the most difficult things for them was to hear the sounds of the city while being incarcerated - San Francisco is a mere 1.5 miles away. :)
